Answering Machine

I was out the other day. I'm sorry I wasn't with you when you needed me most.
I'm sorry I made you cry for what was left of us. It's like I never knew you.
Your face is like a rose. I wish I could have known you.

But you can be so cold. You rip apart my inspiration.
You seem to hate me so with all the hurtful incarnations of the persons I can't be.
For I am nothing but a mouse belittled by your expectations.

Life is just a play. We are simply actors
In a giant brigade of fraudulent well wishers.
I thought you could save me from it all.

Life is just a speck; a speck I cannot swallow.
As you look straight through me; You're looking awful; hollow.
With your head in the sky and your feet on the ground…
I guess I'm there too.

I'm sorry you were gone.
I'm sorry that I missed you but I needed you most.
I never want to admit that I shed a tear for you,
for you never really knew me-- I never really knew myself.
